He was born to a Canadian father and a Native American mother. Being of Native American descent he did not receive much respect from his peers but that soon changed. Being one of the first men to discover the Columbia River (the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region) and the sole owner of Hudson's Bay Company he died an inspiration to many. His legacy can still be found in America today; the Jocko Valley and the Jocko River in Montana are both named after him.
