The Interesting History of Mala Beads

First created in India 3000 years ago, Malas were meditation tools that had roots in Yoga, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The Seers of India, or spiritual guides, understood the need for an aid during their spiritual practices and that is why, thousands of years ago, they started to use Mala beads to help them during meditation. It was in 8 B.C when the use of these Mala beads started to spread in Hinduism and Buddhism.

They soon became very popular, traveled the world, and even took hold of Buddha's own followers. Malas encountered new places, transformed with each new culture, and arrived in China, Burma, Nepal, and Tibet.

Why 108 beads?

The number 108 is a representation of how many beads there are on a Mala but has also long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga. Monks and meditators have used the Mala for centuries to count the number of mantras or prayers as they recite. Each of the 108 beads represents the 108 Human Passions.
